Buellia disciformis is a crustose, bark-dwelling lichen marked by a thin white to gray or yellow-gray thallus and contrasting round black apothecia. The apothecia contain brown spores that are usually divided by one septum, a feature that helps distinguish the species from similar lichens with black fruiting discs. It grows mainly on smooth, moderately moist bark in established woodland and is frequent in northern and western Britain and Ireland. Chemical reactions are also used in formal identification.
