Burzum is the solo project of Varg Vikernes, who writes, performs, and records all instruments and vocals himself. He was a central figure in the early 1990s Norwegian black metal scene and was associated with the band Mayhem before Burzum became his primary focus.

Vikernes was convicted of the 1993 murder of Mayhem guitarist Øystein 'Euronymous' Aarseth, for which he served approximately 15 years in prison. He was also convicted of several church arsons connected to the Norwegian black metal scene of the early 1990s.
