Posey suffered a fractured fibula and ankle-ligament damage in a home-plate collision with Scott Cousins. The injury helped drive Major League Baseball's later adoption of Rule 7.13 restricting collisions at home plate.

Posey returned to hit .336, winning the National League batting title while catching for the World Series champion Giants. He also received the 2012 NL MVP award.
