Smith, a Marine Corps general who commanded amphibious forces in the Pacific during World War II, the camp serves as headquarters for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) and Marine Corps Forces, Pacific (MARFORPAC). Established in 1955, it is one of the key command-and-control nodes for U.S. military operations in the Indo-Pacific region.
