help Molokini Crater FAQ

Is Molokini a complete volcanic crater or only part of one?

The visible crescent is the southern rim of an eroded volcanic crater between Maui and Kahoʻolawe. Most of the formation lies below the Pacific, with the curved rim sheltering a shallow interior reef.

Can you reach Molokini Crater without a boat?

Molokini is offshore and has no public bridge, ferry terminal, or ordinary beach access, so visitors normally arrive on permitted snorkel or dive boats from Maui. Landings on the islet are restricted because it is also a state seabird sanctuary.

Why is snorkeling inside Molokini different from diving the back wall?

The crater interior contains a comparatively sheltered coral reef, including areas shallow enough for snorkeling. The outer back wall drops into much deeper, more exposed water and is intended for appropriately trained scuba divers.

Are visitors allowed to fish or collect coral at Molokini?

Molokini is a Hawaii Marine Life Conservation District, where taking or injuring marine life is prohibited except for specifically authorized activities. Coral, fish, eggs, and other protected resources must remain in place.
