description Kaula Rock Overview

Kaula Rock is a small volcanic islet southwest of Niihau in the Hawaiian Islands. It is a tuff cone, a type of volcanic landform created when rising magma interacts explosively with water and deposits fine volcanic material around the vent. Kaula is used as a United States Navy bombing range and is also protected as a wildlife refuge, particularly for seabirds that nest on the remote island.
