Canadian War Museum

The museum is located at 1 Vimy Place in Ottawa, Ontario, on LeBreton Flats near the Ottawa River. The current building was designed by the architectural firm Moriyama & Teshima and opened in 2005. It sits a short distance west of Parliament Hill.

The museum holds extensive collections documenting Canada's military history from early colonial conflicts through both World Wars to modern peacekeeping operations. One of the most famous artifacts is the Mercedes-Benz limousine used by Adolf Hitler, displayed in the Second World War gallery. The museum also houses a large collection of military vehicles, artillery, and works by Canadian war artists.

The current building opened in May 2005, timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The design incorporates symbolic architectural elements, including Regeneration Hall, whose narrow window frame aligns with the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill. The building's low, grass-covered profile was intended to echo the landscape rather than dominate it.

The Canadian War Museum is a separate institution with its own building and distinct collections, though both are affiliated under the Canadian Museum of History corporate umbrella. The War Museum focuses specifically on Canada's military history, while the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec covers broader cultural and social history. Admission to one institution often grants discounted access to the other.
