description Cancer Minor Overview
Cancer Minor, the 'Lesser Crab,' was a small constellation introduced by the Dutch astronomer and cartographer Petrus Plancius in 1613, placed among faint stars southwest of Gemini. It appeared on 17th-century celestial globes and star charts, part of the era's practice of filling gaps in the sky with new figures, but it never gained lasting acceptance and was later dropped from standard atlases. It is among the obsolete constellations that did not survive into the modern 88-constellation scheme recognized by the International Astronomical Union.
