Carl Darling Buck (1866–1955) was an American linguist and philologist who served as professor of Sanskrit and comparative philology at the University of Chicago. His 1949 work A Dictionary of Selected Synonyms in the Principal Indo-European Languages systematically compared synonym fields across Indo-European and several other language families, organizing entries by semantic categories such as the physical world and mental faculties.
