Carl Ritter

Ritter treated geography as a systematic discipline concerned with relationships among land, climate, living things, and human societies. His professorship at the University of Berlin helped establish geography as an independent academic field in the 19th century.

Humboldt emphasized measurement, field observation, and broad physical patterns across nature, while Ritter placed greater weight on comparing regions and interpreting their influence on human history. The two scholars are commonly described as co-founders of modern geography.

Ritter's central project was Die Erdkunde im Verhältniss zur Natur und zur Geschichte des Menschen, usually shortened to Erdkunde. It grew into a vast multi-volume regional study, although Ritter died before completing his intended survey of the world.

Ritter sometimes described geographical regions as if they had providential purposes in human history. Modern geographers generally reject that teleological framing, even while recognizing his role in promoting comparative regional research.
