Castello Ursino

description Castello Ursino Overview

Castello Ursino is a medieval castle in Catania, Sicily, built for Emperor Frederick II of the Hohenstaufen dynasty between 1239 and 1250. It was constructed as a coastal defensive fortress, but the 1669 eruption of Mount Etna sent lava around the building and changed the shoreline, leaving the castle inland from the sea. Since 1934 it has housed Catania's Civic Museum, with archaeological and historical collections.
