description Hermitage Castle Overview
Hermitage Castle is a stone fortress ruin in Liddesdale, in the Scottish Borders. The earliest records for the site date to the 1240s, while the present castle was begun around 1360 by Sir Hugh de Dacre and later expanded by the Douglas family. Its history is linked to control of the Scottish Middle March and to James Hepburn, fourth Earl of Bothwell, whose injury in 1566 prompted Mary, Queen of Scots, to visit the castle.
