Castle Butte (Saskatchewan)

Castle Butte is located in the Big Muddy Badlands of southern Saskatchewan, Canada, an area known for its dramatic eroded landscapes. It is accessible via rural gravel roads in the Big Muddy Valley region, and visitors typically approach from the nearby community of Bengough or other surrounding towns.

Castle Butte can be approached on foot, and some visitors attempt to scramble up its lower slopes, though there is no formally maintained trail to the top. The formation's steep-sided profile and composition of bentonite clay and sandstone mean that the surface can be unstable, especially after rain.

Castle Butte rises approximately 70 metres (about 230 feet) above the surrounding prairie. It is composed largely of bentonite clay and sandstone, materials that have been shaped by erosion into its distinctive steep-sided, castle-like profile against the flat prairie landscape.

Castle Butte is the most prominent landmark in the Big Muddy Badlands, a region of southern Saskatchewan featuring eroded coulees, cliffs, and unusual rock formations. The area is also known for its historical connections to early 20th-century outlaws who used the rugged terrain as hideouts, and several guided tours of the region are available.
