description Charles Richter Overview

Charles Francis Richter was an American seismologist and physicist who spent most of his career at the California Institute of Technology. In 1935, he collaborated with his colleague Beno Gutenberg to develop the Richter magnitude scale. This logarithmic scale was designed to quantify the total energy released by an earthquake by measuring the amplitude of waves recorded by seismographs. Richter was also a prominent advocate for building safety codes in seismically active regions like Southern California.
