It was included as a Troisième Cru, or Third Growth, in the 1855 classification of the Médoc and Graves wines. The estate is part of the Barton family's Bordeaux holdings and has remained under Barton family ownership since 1821. Its red wine is made from the traditional Bordeaux grape varieties, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc used in the blend.
The estate is separate from, but closely associated with, neighboring Château Léoville Barton.
