Château Le Pin

The term "garage wine" refers to small-production, high-end wines made in non-traditional, tiny facilities, and Château Le Pin is the original pioneer of this movement. The Thienpont family famously started making the wine in a repurposed garage on their tiny Pomerol property in the early 1980s. Their micro-winemaking approach allowed for obsessive manual labor, resulting in a radically concentrated style that commanded luxury prices.

Château Le Pin produces an incredibly small amount of wine, yielding only about 500 to 600 cases per year. The estate is just under 5 acres in size, planted densely with mostly Merlot vines. This microscopic production scale ensures extreme concentration but also means the wine is virtually impossible to find on the retail market.

Château Le Pin is owned by the Thienpont family, a prominent Belgian wine merchant dynasty, and is currently managed by Jacques Thienpont. They purchased the small, unheralded plot of land in Pomerol in 1979 for one million francs. Through meticulous viticulture and modern winemaking, they transformed this obscure plot into one of the most famous micro-estates in the world.

A bottle of Château Le Pin is one of the most expensive wines in Bordeaux, routinely fetching between $3,000 and $8,000 depending on the vintage. This staggering price is a direct result of its cult status and its minuscule annual production. Collectors often have to wait years on allocation lists just for the opportunity to purchase a single bottle.
