It lives in dry, exposed habitats such as gravelly clearings, eroded soil, dry clay banks, rocky slopes, and shortgrass prairie, often near rivers or ravines. Its yellow hindwing has a dark crossband, and adults produce a sharp snapping or rattling flight sound called crepitation, used in courtship, territorial encounters, or when disturbed.
