Clarence J. Glacken was an American geographer and historian of ideas whose scholarship examined changing conceptions of the relationship between humanity and the natural world. His major work, Traces on the Rhodian Shore, published in 1967, surveys Western thought from antiquity through the eighteenth century. It traces debates over whether nature was purposefully designed, how environments influenced societies, and how people altered the Earth.
