Coen Brothers

The filmmaking duo consists of brothers Joel Coen and Ethan Coen. Joel is typically credited as the director on their movies, while Ethan is credited as the producer, though they write, edit, and produce their films entirely together. They are famous for their distinct, darkly comedic style.

Despite the famous on-screen text at the beginning of the 1996 film claiming it is based on a true story, the plot of 'Fargo' is entirely fictional. The Coen Brothers included the text as a stylistic joke to set the tone for the audience. They eventually admitted in interviews that the story was completely invented, though it draws loosely on general Midwestern crime tropes.

Their feature film debut was 'Blood Simple,' a neo-noir crime thriller released in 1984. The film introduced their signature style of dark humor, tension, and betrayal. It was heavily praised and won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, effectively launching their Hollywood career.

The Coen Brothers won four Academy Awards for their 2007 film 'No Country for Old Men': Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. This made them the first directing duo to win the Best Director Oscar since 1962. The film itself is an adaptation of a novel by author Cormac McCarthy.
