Colchicum autumnale

description Colchicum autumnale Overview

Colchicum autumnale, commonly known as autumn crocus or meadow saffron, is a toxic autumn-blooming perennial native to Europe. The plant grows from underground corms and produces purple, crocus-like flowers in the fall, while its broad leaves emerge separately in the spring before dying back. It contains the potent alkaloid colchicine, which has been used medicinally for centuries and remains a standard clinical treatment for acute gout flares. Due to the high toxicity of all its parts, it is generally cultivated only as an ornamental bulb plant in specialized gardens.
