The common dunnart, Sminthopsis murina, is a small insectivorous marsupial found across parts of southern Australia. It belongs to the dunnart genus Sminthopsis, which contains about 21 species, and is adapted to environments where food and temperature can vary. The species can enter torpor, a temporary reduction in body activity and temperature, during cold conditions or periods when food is scarce.
