Conspicuous Gallantry Cross

The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC) is a British military medal instituted in 1993 to recognize exceptional acts of bravery during active combat operations. It serves as the second-highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy, ranking just below the Victoria Cross. It is a prestigious honor bestowed upon all ranks of the armed forces, including the British Army and Royal Navy.

The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross was created in 1993 as part of a major review of the British honors system to eliminate rank-based distinctions for bravery. Prior to 1993, officers received the Distinguished Service Order, while lower ranks received the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal. The new CGC was designed to be an entirely level playing field, recognizing gallantry regardless of the recipient's military rank.

The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross is a silver cross pattée with a distinct circular center bearing the Crown of Saint Edward. The reverse of the medal is engraved with the recipient's name, rank, and service number, along with the date of the recognized action. It is suspended from a dark blue ribbon with a central vertical stripe of white, symbolizing its status in the British honors system.

The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross can be awarded to personnel from all ranks of the British Armed Forces, including the Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force. It is also eligible to be posthumously awarded to individuals killed during their act of valor. Additionally, allied foreign military personnel serving alongside British forces under specific command arrangements are eligible for the award.
