Da Yu Ding

The interior of the Da Yu Ding contains a 291-character inscription outlining the commands given by King Kang of the Western Zhou dynasty. It documents a debate over alcohol abuse among government officials, warning the recipient not to follow the ruinous example of the preceding Shang dynasty.

The massive bronze vessel was cast during the early Western Zhou dynasty, specifically during the reign of King Kang around the 10th century BC. It is one of the most important surviving bronze artifacts from early China.

The Da Yu Ding is currently on display at the National Museum of China in Beijing. It has survived centuries of political upheaval, including being nearly sold by a poverty-stricken Qing dynasty official in the 19th century.

The vessel is incredibly important to historians and paleographers because its long inscription provides one of the most detailed primary sources regarding the political philosophy and legal structures of the Western Zhou period. The style of the Chinese characters used in the inscription is also a masterpiece of ancient Chinese calligraphy.
