description David Livingstone Overview

David Livingstone was a Scottish physician, Congregationalist, and pioneer medical missionary with the London Missionary Society and an explorer in Africa. His expeditions across the African continent, particularly his search for the source of the Nile, made him a national hero in Britain. Livingstone was also a staunch opponent of the slave trade, and his reports on the horrors of the trade helped galvanize public opinion against it. His exploration of the interior of Africa opened up the continent to European interest, though his legacy is complex due to the subsequent colonial exploitation.
