Deadhouse Gates

Set primarily on the fictional subcontinent of Seven Cities, the narrative follows a massive rebellion known as the Whirlwind. It depicts the local population rising up in a brutal, bloody war against the Malazan Empire.

Deadhouse Gates is the second volume in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. While the two books largely follow separate casts and continents, it is highly recommended to read them in publication order to properly understand the overarching lore.

The Chain of Dogs is a central and famous storyline in the novel, following the military commander Coltaine as he attempts to evacuate refugees across a hostile continent. It is known among fantasy readers for being an emotionally grueling and tragic military campaign.
