In the First Edition game, players normally seed missions along a shared spaceline and send personnel, ships, and equipment to solve them. A player generally seeks to reach 100 points, although cards and special formats can alter the winning conditions.

Decipher's 1994 First Edition uses spacelines, seed phases, and a highly open card-interaction system. Second Edition, released in 2002, redesigned costs, dilemmas, headquarters, and deck construction to create a more standardized game.

Some early Second Edition cards carried a backwards-compatible bar that allowed them to be used under First Edition conversion rules. The reverse is not generally true, because ordinary First Edition cards were not designed for Second Edition's cost and icon systems.

Yes. The Continuing Committee supports organized play and releases printable virtual expansions for both First Edition and Second Edition. Players combine those free cards with Decipher's physical cards from properties including The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and the original series.
