description Deepwater Stingray Overview
The deepwater stingray (Plesiobatis daviesi) is a large cartilaginous fish found in the Indo-Pacific region and the sole recognized member of the family Plesiobatidae. It is a benthic species that typically inhabits the continental slope at depths ranging from 200 to 670 meters, though it can occasionally be found deeper. Recognizable by its broad, diamond-shaped disc and long, whip-like tail, it feeds on the ocean floor, consuming small fish and invertebrates. Due to its deep-sea habitat, it is rarely encountered and poses little threat to humans.
