Deorkothar Stupa

The Deorkothar Stupa is an important archaeological site located in the Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, India. It sits in a region rich with ancient history, dating back to the Mauryan period. The remote location helped preserve its ruins until modern archaeological excavations began.

The Deorkothar Stupa dates back to the 3rd century BCE, making it a contemporary of the Mauryan Empire. This means it was constructed roughly during the reign of Emperor Ashoka, a pivotal figure in the spread of Buddhism. Some historians believe it may actually predate the famous Sanchi Stupa.

The Mauryan-period rock art and surviving pillars at Deorkothar Stupa provide crucial insights into early Buddhist architecture and artistic traditions. The site features four surviving stone pillars that display intricate carvings and ancient inscriptions. This art helps archaeologists trace the evolution of religious imagery in ancient India.
