Derbent Fortress

description Derbent Fortress Overview

The Derbent Fortress, also known as Naryn-Kala, is a large Sasanian defensive complex located in Dagestan, Russia. Constructed primarily in the 6th century AD under the rule of Khosrow I, it was built to control the narrow Caspian passage between the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian Sea. The massive stone walls extended from the mountains to the sea, forming a formidable barrier against northern invasions into the Sasanian Empire. The site is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its historical significance and well-preserved medieval architecture.
