Devs

Devs consists of exactly eight episodes, each running roughly 45 to 60 minutes, and was conceived as a self-contained limited series with a definitive ending. All eight episodes were written and directed by Alex Garland, marking his first television project after films like Ex Machina and Annihilation.

The cast is led by Sonoya Mizuno as Lily Chan, a software engineer investigating her boyfriend's death, alongside Nick Offerman as the enigmatic Amaya CEO Forest. The ensemble also includes Jin Ha, Zach Grenier, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson in supporting roles.

Devs centers on a secretive division of a fictional Silicon Valley company called Amaya that has built a quantum computer allegedly capable of deterministically predicting the future and reconstructing the past. Garland uses this premise to explore themes of determinism versus free will, drawing on concepts from quantum mechanics and the many-worlds interpretation.

Devs is not a sequel or spin-off of any of Garland's films, but it shares thematic DNA with both Ex Machina and Annihilation—particularly the dangers of powerful technology and the limits of human comprehension. Devs was his first project written specifically for television, allowing him to develop ideas over a longer runtime than a feature film permits.
