Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg

It is Wagner's only mature comedy and also his longest opera, running about four and a half hours with only two intermissions. It premiered at the National Theatre Munich in 1868 under the baton of Hans von Bülow.

The main character, Hans Sachs, is based on a real 16th-century German shoemaker, poet, and master singer who lived in Nuremberg. The opera accurately depicts the historical, strict rules of the "Meistersinger" (Master Singers) guild.

The lush orchestral overture is frequently performed as a standalone piece at orchestral concerts. It perfectly captures the grand, triumphant spirit of German art and culture that Wagner aimed to celebrate in the opera.

The young knight Walther von Stolzing must learn the complex rules of the master singers to win a song contest and the hand of the beautiful Eva. His rival, the pedantic clerk Sixtus Beckmesser, serves as the primary comic antagonist.
