Johannes Gutenberg

Johannes Gutenberg is credited with inventing the mechanical movable-type printing press in Europe. This invention revolutionized the dissemination of information by allowing books to be produced quickly and cheaply compared to hand-copied manuscripts. His innovation is widely considered one of the most important inventions of the second millennium.

The first major book printed using Gutenberg's press was the Gutenberg Bible, completed around 1455. Also known as the 42-line Bible, it is celebrated for its high aesthetic and technical quality, which mimicked the look of hand-written manuscripts. Only a few dozen complete copies survive today, making it one of the most valuable printed books in the world.

Gutenberg lived and worked primarily in Mainz, Germany, where he was born around the year 1400. He conducted his printing experiments in a workshop in the city, funded by loans from a merchant named Johann Fust. Despite the success of his invention, financial disputes with Fust eventually led to Gutenberg losing his printing press and workshop.

The Gutenberg press sparked the Printing Revolution in Europe, leading to a massive increase in literacy and the rapid spread of new ideas. It played a crucial role in enabling the Protestant Reformation and the Renaissance by allowing texts to be reproduced on an unprecedented scale. Within decades, printing presses had spread to over 200 cities across the continent.
