Alois Senefelder was a German actor and playwright who invented the printing process of lithography in 1796. He discovered the technique while trying to find an affordable way to publish his own theatrical works. Lithography relies on the immiscibility of oil and water, allowing an image drawn with a greasy substance on a limestone to be reproduced using oil-based ink. This invention became a fundamental method for commercial printing and graphic arts.
