Dissection - The Somberlain

"The Somberlain" was officially released in 1993 as the debut studio album by the Swedish extreme metal band Dissection. It was first distributed by the independent Swedish record label No Fashion Records. The record immediately established the band as a formidable force in the underground metal scene.

The album was entirely driven by the creative vision of Jon Nödtveidt, who served as the lead guitarist and vocalist. Nödtveidt's distinct guitar style and melodic riffing heavily defined the band's unique sonic identity. The album also featured instrument contributions from Peter Palmdahl on bass and Ole Öhman on drums.

The album is highly recognized for its innovative blend of second-wave black metal aesthetics with melodic death metal structures. Unlike the raw, lo-fi sound of their Norwegian peers, Dissection featured clean, highly technical dual-guitar harmonies. This unique blend created an influential template that spawned the entire "melodic black metal" subgenre.

The instrumental track "Soulreaper" showcases heavy influences from classical music, particularly inspired by the chromatic scales of classical composers. Jon Nödtveidt was heavily inspired by the dramatic, dark arrangements of 19th-century Romantic composers. This classical influence separated Dissection from other thrash and death metal bands of the era.
