Dobšiná Ice Cave

description Dobšiná Ice Cave Overview

Dobšiná Ice Cave is an ice-filled limestone cave in the Slovak Paradise region of Slovakia. Persistent cold conditions within its enclosed lower spaces preserve extensive floors, walls, columns, and other masses of ice, with deposits reported to reach about 26.5 metres in thickness. Since 2000 it has formed part of the UNESCO World Heritage property known as the Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst, and a managed route allows seasonal public visits.

help Dobšiná Ice Cave FAQ

Where is Dobšiná Ice Cave?

It is in the Slovak Paradise region of Slovakia. The cave is a limestone formation whose enclosed lower spaces stay cold enough to preserve a large mass of ice. [Slovakia Travel](https://slovakia.travel/en/things-to-see-and-do/discovering-slovakia-from-home/dobsina-ice-cave)

Why does Dobšiná Ice Cave stay frozen?

Persistent cold conditions in the cave's lower, enclosed spaces allow ice to remain year after year. The cave's shape limits warm-air circulation, helping preserve ice floors, walls, columns, and other deposits.

How thick is the ice in Dobšiná Ice Cave?

The thickest ice deposits are reported at about 26.5 meters. That figure refers to the maximum ice thickness in the cave, not the depth of the entire limestone passage. [Dobšiná official site](https://eng.dobsina.sk/dobsinska-ice-cave.phtml?id3=96449)

Is Dobšiná Ice Cave a glacier or a limestone cave?

It is an ice-filled limestone cave, not a surface glacier. Its unusual feature is the large amount of permanent ice preserved inside the underground karst system.
