Drumochter Hills

The Drumochter Hills are a mountain range situated in the central Highlands of Scotland, acting as a natural border between the Perth and Kinross and Highland council areas. They are famously divided directly down the middle by the Pass of Drumochter. This pass serves as the major transportation artery between the Lowlands and the northern Highlands.

The Pass of Drumochter is a major geographical bottleneck that carries both the A9 road and the Highland Main Line railway. Because of the high elevation of the pass at 1,515 feet, the route is highly susceptible to heavy snowfall and closures during the winter months. It is the most critical transport link in the central Highlands.

The Drumochter Hills are characterized by extensive heather moorland and heath, providing a vital habitat for upland bird species like the ptarmigan, dotterel, and red grouse. Much of the area is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The landscape is heavily managed for traditional grouse shooting and deer stalking.

Peaks like Geal-chàrn and Càrn Dearg offer challenging, remote walking experiences with expansive views across the central Highlands.
