description Ecce Homo Arch, Jerusalem Overview
The Ecce Homo Arch is a surviving Roman arch in Jerusalem's Old City, incorporated into buildings above the Via Dolorosa near the Sisters of Zion Convent. It dates to the reign of Emperor Hadrian, around 135 CE, and was part of a three-bayed gate associated with a forum in the Roman city of Aelia Capitolina. Christian tradition linked the arch with Pontius Pilate's presentation of Jesus, but that identification is historically impossible because the arch was built after the event.
