Edwin Land

The Land Camera, introduced in 1948 as the Polaroid Model 95, used a self-developing film system in which the exposed negative was pulled through rollers alongside a positive receiving sheet, spreading a chemical reagent between them to develop and transfer the image in about 60 seconds. This eliminated the need to send film to a lab for processing, making Polaroid the first practical instant photography system available to consumers.

Edwin Land co-founded the Polaroid Corporation in 1937, initially to commercialize his invention of polarizing filters, which were used in sunglasses, camera filters, and military equipment. The company pivoted toward instant photography a decade later, and Land remained the driving force behind Polaroid's research and product development for decades.

Edwin Land held more than 500 U.S. patents, placing him among the most prolific American inventors in history alongside figures like Thomas Edison. His patents spanned polarizing materials, instant photography systems, and optical technologies developed throughout his career at Polaroid.

Introduced in 1972, the Polaroid SX-70 was a folding single-lens reflex instant camera that produced fully self-contained color prints requiring no manual peel-apart development, representing a major leap over earlier Land Camera designs. The SX-70's sleek leather-and-chrome body, designed with help from Henry Dreyfuss, became an iconic consumer product and was famously used by artists like Andy Warhol.
