Eileen Gray E 1027 Adjustable Table

The E 1027 table was designed by the Irish architect and furniture designer Eileen Gray in 1927. She created the table specifically for a modernist villa she was designing in the south of France. The table was originally manufactured and sold by her Paris-based design studio, Jean Désert.

Gray used a combination of a clear tempered glass top and a polished chrome-plated steel frame to reflect the sleek modernist aesthetic of the 1920s machine age. The use of tubular steel was heavily championed by contemporaries like Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer. The transparent glass top was specifically chosen to keep the visual lines of the base unobstructed.

The C-shaped base and tilting frame allow the tabletop to slide perfectly over the base of a bed or chair. Eileen Gray originally designed it so her sister could enjoy breakfast in bed without getting crumbs on her sheets. The arm can be locked into various heights using a simple exposed pin mechanism.

The authentic E 1027 table is currently licensed and manufactured by ClassiCon, a German furniture company. ClassiCon holds the worldwide exclusive rights to Eileen Gray's designs. Due to its hand-polished nature, each authentic ClassiCon table features a tiny, laser-engraved serial number to prove its authenticity.
