Emily Warren Roebling

Emily Warren Roebling took over the day-to-day supervision of the Brooklyn Bridge's construction after her husband, chief engineer Washington Roebling, became incapacitated by caisson disease (the bends). She served as the primary liaison between her husband and the construction crew for over a decade. She is widely credited with ensuring the project's successful completion in 1883.

While she never held the official title of Chief Engineer, she was deeply respected by the engineering community and politicians. She studied civil engineering concepts, material strengths, and cable construction to effectively represent her husband. At the bridge's opening ceremony, she was honored as the first person to cross it.

She learned extensively on the job, studying her husband Washington's notes, plans, and engineering texts. She also took on the responsibility of answering correspondence and negotiating with contractors and politicians. Her rapid mastery of complex engineering topics allowed her to successfully manage the massive infrastructure project.

Emily was the sister of Gouverneur K. Warren, a prominent Union Army general and hero of the Battle of Gettysburg. She actually met her husband, Washington Roebling, while visiting her brother at a military camp during the American Civil War. Her family connections brought her into elite social and professional circles.
