John A. Roebling

John A. Roebling is most famous for designing the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, which spans the East River in New York City. He was also responsible for designing the earlier John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge over the Ohio River. His pioneering work fundamentally advanced the construction of wire cable suspension bridges.

Roebling died from tetanus in 1869 after his foot was crushed in a ferry accident while surveying the Brooklyn Bridge site. He sustained the injury when a docking ferry pinned his foot against a wooden piling. His son, Washington Roebling, took over as chief engineer and saw the project to its completion in 1883.
