The Yongle Emperor was the third emperor of China's Ming dynasty, reigning from 1402 to 1424 after taking the throne from his nephew in a civil war. He transferred the principal imperial capital from Nanjing to Beijing and directed construction of the palace complex now known as the Forbidden City. His government also sponsored the compilation of the Yongle Encyclopedia and the maritime expeditions commanded by the admiral Zheng He.

How did the Yongle Emperor seize the Ming throne?
Zhu Di rebelled against his nephew, the Jianwen Emperor, in the Jingnan campaign and captured Nanjing in 1402. He then took the reign title Yongle and portrayed his accession as a restoration of proper government.
Did the Yongle Emperor build the Forbidden City?
He ordered the construction of the Beijing palace complex now called the Forbidden City, with major work conducted from 1406 to 1420. Beijing formally became the Ming dynasty's principal capital in 1421.
