Enver Hoxha (1908–1985) ruled Albania as head of its communist Party of Labour from 1944 until his death in 1985, serving first as prime minister and later as first secretary. He broke with the Soviet Union in 1961 and with China in 1978, espousing a rigid anti-revisionist Marxism–Leninism since labeled Hoxhaism. Under his rule Albania became one of the world's most isolated states, defended by hundreds of thousands of concrete bunkers and policed by the Sigurimi secret service.
