description Ieng Sary Overview
Ieng Sary was a Cambodian communist politician and senior leader of the Khmer Rouge. During Democratic Kampuchea, the state established after the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh in 1975, he served as deputy prime minister and foreign minister. The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, a tribunal created by Cambodia and the United Nations, charged him with genocide, crimes against humanity, and grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions; he died in 2013 before a verdict was reached in his case.
