Erik the Red

description Erik the Red Overview

Erik the Red was a Norse explorer associated with the establishment of permanent European settlements in Greenland near the end of the tenth century. According to medieval Icelandic sources, he sailed west after being exiled from Iceland, explored Greenland's coast, and later returned with settlers who founded the Eastern and Western Settlements. He was the father of Leif Erikson, and his career is chiefly reconstructed from the sagas and archaeological evidence for Norse Greenland.
