Burmeister described it in 1839, and the species belongs to Erythemis, a New World genus whose members are commonly known as pondhawks. Its recorded distribution extends from Mexico into South America, placing it among the tropical and subtropical dragonflies of the Western Hemisphere. The name identifies a living species, not a fossil taxon or a manufactured object.
