Esther

description Esther Overview

Esther is an English oratorio by George Frideric Handel based on the biblical story of the Jewish queen who protects her people from Haman’s plot. Handel first wrote the piece around 1718 as the masque Haman and Mordecai, then revised and expanded it for public performance in London in 1732. The oratorio uses solo scenes, choruses, and orchestral writing to present the conflict among Esther, Mordecai, Haman, and King Ahasuerus. It belongs to the early development of Handel’s English sacred drama.
