Ethiopian Escarpment

The Ethiopian Escarpment forms the dramatic western edge of the Ethiopian Highlands, separating the high-altitude plateau from the lowlands. It stretches through the central part of the country, descending steeply into the vast lowland regions that lead toward the Sudanese border.

The escarpment was largely formed by tectonic activity associated with the East African Rift system. As the African and Somali tectonic plates began to pull apart, massive sections of the earth's crust dropped down, leaving the towering plateau edges and deep valleys visible today.

Yes, the escarpment region is home to the Semien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This dramatic landscape features jagged mountain peaks and deep valleys, and provides a habitat for unique endangered species like the Walia ibex and the Gelada baboon.

Because of the extreme drop in elevation, the escarpment creates a microclimate characterized by drastic temperature changes. The high plateau experiences cool temperatures, while the descent into the lowlands quickly transitions into intensely hot and arid desert conditions.
