description ETR 500 Frecciarossa Overview
The Elettro Treno Rapido 500 (ETR 500) is a family of Italian high-speed electric trainsets operated by Trenitalia on the national alta velocità network. Introduced into commercial service in the 1990s, the non-tilting trainsets are capable of speeds up to 300 km/h in regular passenger operation. The trainsets were manufactured by a consortium of Italian companies coordinated by Trenitalia and its predecessors. The ETR 500 fleet has been progressively supplemented by the newer ETR 1000 series on some high-speed routes.

help ETR 500 Frecciarossa FAQ
Is the ETR 500 a locomotive-hauled train or a multiple unit?
The ETR 500 is a fixed high-speed formation with a power car at each end and unpowered passenger coaches between them. That differs from newer distributed-power trains such as the ETR 1000, whose traction equipment is spread through the train.
How fast does the ETR 500 run in passenger service?
ETR 500 Frecciarossa sets operate at up to 300 km/h on suitable Italian high-speed lines. Test runs have exceeded normal service speed, but scheduled passengers travel under the network's operating limit.
What is the difference between ETR 500 and Frecciarossa 1000?
The ETR 500 uses two dedicated power cars, while the Frecciarossa 1000, also known as ETR 400, is a newer distributed-power train. The Frecciarossa 1000 was designed for greater interoperability and more modern passenger systems.
Which Italian routes are associated with the ETR 500?
The train became a mainstay of the Turin, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome, and Naples high-speed corridor. Trenitalia later extended Frecciarossa services farther north and south as Italy's alta velocità network and conventional connections expanded.
