Everett C. Hughes was an American sociologist associated with the Chicago School and the study of symbolic interaction. His research examined occupations, professional status, institutions, ethnic relations, and the moral divisions embedded in everyday work, including the concept of "dirty work." Through his teaching and field-oriented scholarship at the University of Chicago, he influenced later sociological research on professions, organizations, and race relations.
